DNA Biometrics

In an unsecure environment, any identity relies on its biometrics behind. This is why biometrics really matter for securing identities.

Existing identification systems for people are usually based on gender, height, eye colour, hair colour, fingerprints and a biometric passport photo. This means that a person can be identified with a somehow high degree of probability. However, such biometric features are increasingly being faked. The biometrics used today are neither forgery-proof nor accurate nor suitable for every user. The false negative rate of facial recognition and fingerprinting does not allow for reliable identification of a person among around currently eight billion people on our planet. In addition, there are people who, for example, due to hard physical labour no longer have a readable fingerprint. This means currently used biometrics are not necessarily inclusive.

One approach trying to solve this problem has been presented based on iris scan. Although the iris is a significantly more accurate biometric than fingerprints or facial recognition, it can also be easily faked. Furthermore, the iris is not suitable as proof of identity for every user, since not every person has a healthy iris. For these reasons, the method is not suitable for detecting all people in the world, i.e. it is ‘not inclusive’. In this respect, the iris scan approach reaches its limits.
